800 years ago this year, King Alexander II of Scotland founded the Royal Burgh of Dumbarton. It began life as a frontier town and naval base, and over the years has kept re-inventing itself, with glass-works, ship-building and distilling being part of its story. It has withstood war, civil war, the Black Death and many other sorts of diseases and plagues. We’ll come through Covid as well. Here’s to the next 800 years!
